North Carolina law provides certain access rights to municipal personnel records for an employee or authorized agent, with exceptions. It also provides a procedure for addressing material believed to be inaccurate or misleading. Other employers can be subject to different provisions.
Request the appropriate records through lawful channels. Do not assume that access to an agency system authorizes downloading investigative files, recordings, coworkers’ records, or other restricted information for a personal dispute.
